Is it possible to manage by making decisions alone?
Is it possible to manage through conflict?
Managing styles are probably like driving styles. Surveys show that when assessing their driving, most drivers say they drive best. After all, they get to their their destination. The only question is how? I recently heard about a Guinness World Record application for driving from Poland to Paris and back on a single tank of gas. I drove the same car (maybe with a different engine) from Lublin to Szczecin and had to refuel twice.
So when do managers say they need to change something in their organization?
When something goes wrong?
When the company is on the brink?
Someone recently told me that in order to change something, you have to stand on the edge of a cliff or “hit a wall.” But isn’t it too late by then? Maybe yes, maybe not yet. Some managers, or perhaps “leaders”, say that they need to change something in their organization. They talk the talk, but are they really ready for change? Change requires a completely different approach, very often leaving one’s comfort zone (although not all leaders – no quotation marks needed – don’t like that term). But does the thought then kick in: “Well, I’m a good driver, why would I let someone tell me what to do.” Well, you are. You get where you’re going.
But how do you do it?
Do you want to do it differently, more efficiently?
Or are relationships important to you? Empathy? Yes?
Know one thing, I’m not a “tomato soup” either, not everyone has to love me. However, if you want to change something, change your habits. If you don’t want to change your habits, don’t do anything! Einstein said, “If you don’t change anything, nothing will change.” If you want to change something, it unfortunately involves changing your previous habits.
Is it worth changing your management style?
As a leader, you have to answer this question yourself. Do people like change? Most probably not. But for some, stepping out of their comfort zone is something they like. Sometimes leaving your comfort zone is necessary. You have the opportunity to look around, see where you are and maybe think about where you want to be.
In our podcasts, we talk to various leaders about what inspires them, what made them they wanted to change. What path they took. How this path changed them. What they learned. I encourage you to listen to the stories of interesting people. Maybe you will find something for yourself. Something that will inspire you. Maybe you will find answers to your questions and doubts, which I sincerely hope you will.
